2009 GLMX Racer Update

What's new with Great Lakes Motocross?
2/19/09

We've been working hard on preparations for 2009. We've also been getting a lot of questions, so here's a summary of what's happening in Great Lakes Motocross

1. We WILL be running all youth classes as usual this year. We still need to work on an exclusion to the CPSC law for motorcycles and ATVs, and we may ask for your help with that at times, but youth racing is NOT canceled!

2. Membership cards are being processed in the order received; they'll start going in the mail next week. We have confirmed with MX Sports' Tim Cotter that no district membership is required to race a Loretta Lynns Qualifier. MX Sports will specify that in the packet they send to qualifier tracks. You should not have to join the local district when you race an out-of-state qualifier. You may want to call ahead if you expect a track to make you join their district. Let them know to check with Tim Cotter before their event.

3. There will be contingencies from Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki at selected Great Lakes events. Seven Sundays in all will offer contingencies, but not all races are paid by all manufacturers. Check the full race schedule for a listing of dates and contingencies.

4. There are 2 bike championship series in 2009. The first is a spring/summer series called the Michigan Mafia Championship. It starts the first weekend in April and ends the last weekend in July. The second is a summer/fall series called the Mideast Championship. It starts the first weekend in August and ends the first weekend in November.

5. There are 2 ATV series in 2009. Both run all season long, but on different dates. As in the past the ATV Championship series has fewer dates - a total of 14 events. The ATV Challenge series consists of all the ATV races that are not part of the Championship series.

6. We're not cutting the awards in half because there are double the series! We will pay full awards for all series.

7. In addition to awards, there are many sponsors coming on board to give prizes to racers. We'll post the details as they are finalized, but here are some of the things we have lined up: winter jackets from Cold Wave; 2010 rider sponsorships from Pro Circuit; gear bags, chest protectors and more from Thor; product gift certificates from Scott USA; and tons of products from the regional dealers. In fact, we're developing a Great Lakes participating dealer network to help riders, dealers and tracks come together to support motocross in the Great Lakes region. More details to come on that program.

8. All series will pay points PER MOTO. This is a new system, complete with new points tables. Racers will have plenty of "throw-aways" in all series. We know money is tight and we want you to have a good shot at a championship or series award even if you can't race every weekend. We'll count your best 24 motos in the MI Mafia series, best 20 motos in the Mideast series, best 16 motos in both ATV series.

9. When it comes to series awards, we're putting your fate in your hands. We'll set the minimum net points (counting your best 24, 20 or 16 motos) required to win an award in each series, regardless of what final position you get. We also reserve the right to drop that minimum at our discretion in some classes. Some classes will pay more awards than others. Why? There are too many instances where a rider finishes 11th place, only 2 points behind 10th place. Then 12th place drops back 80 points. In cases like that, the 11th place rider should obviously get an award. A) We want you to know your points goal without worrying about what other riders are getting. B) We want to be able to add awards where there should be extras.

If you have questions that aren't answered here, please forward to info@greatlakesmx.com.
There's a good chance someone else will have the same question and we can add it to the next update.
